Windows 10 end of support – what are your options?
The end is near! Well, for Windows 10 at least. As the end of support date for Windows 10 approaches, let’s look at the options.
When will Windows 10 support end?
The Windows 10 support end date is 14 October 2025. This means that Microsoft will no longer provide bug or security fixes, time zone updates, or technical support after that date.
Can I still use Windows 10 after 2025?
Your Windows 10 computer will still function after October 2025, but it will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses as it will be running on an unsupported version of Windows.
Why should I upgrade to Windows 11?
Windows 11 includes enhanced security features such as built-in advanced encryption and data protection, an easy-to-use interface, AI-powered features, and improved search functionality.
What should I do next?
There are a couple of options available
- Upgrade your current machine to Windows 11
For some machines it’s possible to upgrade to Windows 11, but for others it’s not. Microsoft recommend downloading their PC Health Check app on your Windows 10 machines first. This will then assess eligibility and identify components in your device that don’t meet the Windows 11 minimum requirements.
If your computer doesn’t tick all the boxes, then it’s best not to try forcing it onto the latest operating systems as you’ll get all sorts of errors.
- Carry on using Windows 10
We wouldn’t recommend continuing to use Windows 10 after 14 October 2025 as you’ll be vulnerable to security threats without regular Microsoft updates, unless you pay for extended security updates.
- Buy a new device with Windows 11
If you were already thinking about upgrading your Windows device then now would be a good time to make a purchase.
Can I upgrade to Windows 11 for free?
If you’ve got a Windows 10 desktop PC or laptop that meets all the system requirements to run Windows 11, then you can upgrade for free just by using the update tool. Here’s how to do it:
- Type “Windows update settings” into the search bar on the bottom left of your screen.
- Click on the top result that appears.
- Select the ‘Download and Install’ button to start the update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the installation.
