Byte-sized AI: Up, up and… back down! 😕

By Nick Ellis, AI and Innovation Lead | Published 23 Oct 2024

I’m back for another Byte-sized AI issue, and as promised here are my three things: 😁

  1. Something techy from the news
  2. Something that made me laugh
  3. Something that you can do to improve how you work
Byte-sized Ai: IT consultancy in Kent at its best

Every so often in the world of tech something happens that is so astonishing, so utterly gob-smacking that we should all just stop and applaud. The moon landings, the pale blue dot photograph, Deep Blue beating Garry Kasparov. One such event has happened since my last newsletter and not enough people seem to have noticed.

For those who don’t know, that is the bottom half of a rocket coming down – yes, down! – to be caught by those arms. I watched live and honestly my breath caught. This is such a phenomenal work of engineering, AI software development and physics, and it is the beginning of making space flight more like plane flight – reusable, affordable and routine.

If you haven’t already seen it you can watch it here.

At Select Technology’s 30th birthday party there was a game where if you found any one of three tiny photos of our directors you got some Amazon vouchers. Two were found quickly, but the third was highly elusive. The joy of watching colleagues forensically study the venue in minute detail (and go past the picture several times even so) was great.

Side note – 30 years! That’s quite an achievement. Congrats to Nigel, Nick and Simon on building something special. 👏👏

Outlook’s Rules feature is like having a personal email assistant. It automatically sorts, moves, or takes action on incoming messages based on criteria you set.

For instance, you can send emails from specific clients directly to designated folders, flag messages from your boss, or forward team updates to colleagues. This automation not only keeps your inbox organised but also ensures you never miss important emails. By reducing manual sorting, Rules save time and mental energy, letting you focus on what truly matters in your workday. It’s the one underlined in red below:
